Oyster Perpetual GMT-Master was first released in 1955 originally designed for pilots to aid them in navigation and it soon became the official watch of Pan American World Airways, better known worldwide as Pan Am, the most prominent American intercontinental airline at the time.

The bracelets on the new GMT-Master II are equipped with the Easylink rapid extension system.Rolex had patented this system 1996, and allows the wearer to increase the bracelet length by 5 mm, providing additional comfort. They are also fitted with an Oysterlock safety clasp, a mechanism that prevents accidental opening. All GMT-Master II are covered by the Superlative Chronometer certification.
